What Is Pedestal Decking?

A pedestal decking system is a type of patio support for laying pavers. It is usually made of a rigid polymer and features a flat head with a central screwed column and inbuilt paver spacer tabs. It is designed to provide a level surface and can be precision adjusted to the desired height.

Porcelain Paver

Porcelain pavers are an excellent choice for adjustable pedestal decking projects. They have many advantages over concrete and can be used for interior and exterior applications. They are also frost-proof, making them ideal for climates with harsh weather conditions. Porcelain tiles are also nonporous, which helps them drain quickly and help prevent the growth of mildew and mold. Porcelain pavers are also available in a variety of colors and finishes.

Porcelain pavers comprise 3/4″ or 20mm thick load-bearing porcelain paving. They are suitable for pedestal decking and general paving and are very lightweight. In addition, they require no sealing or staining and are very slip resistant.

Polypropylene Plastic

Polypropylene plastic pedestal decking is an ideal solution for various decking applications. They are lightweight and durable and can support decking boards, joists, slabs, and marble tiles. Additionally, they require little maintenance, making them an attractive choice for any outdoor space. These pedestals are available in 160mm and 200mm base diameters and are suitable for traditional and tool-free installation with aluminum joists.

Polypropylene plastic pedestal decking is also environmentally friendly. Most of these products are made from polypropylene plastic, which is both sustainable and environmentally friendly. However, when choosing the material for your new pedestal, check its load-bearing capabilities. The higher its load-bearing capacity, the more durable it will be. Moreover, it is best to choose a sturdy pedestal if your ground is unstable or uneven. If not, you might end up paying for an expensive sub-frame that can delay your project.

Adjustable Tabs

Adjustable tabs on pedestal decking allow for accessible paving without additional components. These tabs come in various sizes and shapes and are designed to accommodate drainage needs. They are also pre-installed in the pedestal head or can be purchased separately. These tabs help ensure that the pavers will sit comfortably apart from each other and create a uniform gap.

This system has an 8″ base plate that provides a stable base on most surfaces. The base plate also has scribe marks for easy installation. For multi-occupancy buildings or sloping surfaces, some options feature a 1/8″ (3mm) thick rubber base ring.

Perimeter Retaining Wall

The perimeter retaining wall with pedestal decks requires a retaining wall that meets local building codes. The wall is typically the lowest height, with a slope toward the drainage area. The perimeter should be surrounded by concrete dividers or parapet retaining walls to ensure the fence is stable. In addition, blockers should be installed at each change in height to prevent the tiles from moving.

The 6-8-10 Rule can be used to determine the level of the perimeter guideline. To begin, measure two points that are six feet apart. Next, measure ten feet out diagonally. The intersection of these two lines will form a perpendicular line to the perimeter guideline. For larger deck layouts, enlarge the triangle. In addition to the perimeter retaining wall, pedestal decking must also be installed on the walls.

Rubber Supports

Rubber supports for pedestal decking provide additional friction to the decking surface. They are ideally suited for sloping surfaces. These products have a low minimum height and can be installed quickly and straightforwardly. The inbuilt spacer tabs can help to adjust the size of the decking.

The pedestal decking supports have a screw slot in the head and a fixing flange. The flange is wide enough to accept a joist of up to three inches in width. They are suitable for various heights, from one to three feet high. The height adjustment is simple and quick – no need to remove joists or use tools.
